| Where is Casa Nostra? Casa Nostra is situated in the small town of Prades, some 40 Kilometres west of Perpignan, France. (Take the Andorra road out of Perpignan.) It
is about 65 Kilometres from the Spanish border, and about 80 Kilometres
from Andorra. PRADES. Prades is a traditional
small Catalan town at the foot of the fabulous Massif du Canigou, and
is sheltered in the valley of the River Tet. This is fruit country so the town
is surrounded by orchards. Prades is some 40 kilometres west of Perpignan with the road link being mainly excellent dual carriageway. A train service runs from Perpignan. This continues up into the mountains on the lovely Yellow Train. A further 10 minutes drive from Perpignan and the land gives way
to the Mediterranean with stretches of wide golden sand BEACHES going either
way as far as the eye can see. Just 10 minutes from Prades is a nice little
sand beach on a fresh water lake at Vinca. To the west and south of
Prades are the MOUNTAINS of the Pyrénées. Forty minutes drive and the visitor
arrives at the ski resorts of Mont Louis and Font Romeu. Prades really is
surrounded by so many ATTRACTIONS that visitors are simply spoilt for choice.
The landscape and the views are stunning. Winter sports fans, mountain
climbers, walkers of all levels and cyclists too will not be disappointed.
Those seeking the tranquillity of peaceful surroundings or visits to spa
facilities have everything on their doorstep. Sun lovers can reach the
beaches in 45 minutes or so. Spain is about an hour (or under) away. Lovers
of art and music will be in their element. In particular, there is the annual
Pablo Casals chamber music festival in July and August which attracts
visitors from all over the world. Churches, Abbeys, museums, castles and
forts are abundant in this area. Prades itself boasts the beautiful Church of
Saint Pierre, originally built in the 12th century then rebuilt in
the 17th century, and featuring memorable interior Baroque
decoration. Just 3 kilometres south of Prades is the prestigious
Saint-Michel-de Cuxa Abbey, a magnificent example of Romanesque art. This paragraph could
continue, but there is just too much to report on! The WEATHER in Prades
has huge advantages over some other parts of the Languedoc-Roussillon department
in that it is sheltered from the Tramontane winds which can be quite fearsome
in more exposed areas. Prades, being some 400 metres above sea level, is 1 or
2 degrees cooler than Perpignan itself. In the high summer months this can be
very helpful!
September and October
can offer sunshine that you simply do not enjoy back in the UK.
